If any artist deserved a hagiography it was Jimi Hendrix, and Joe Boyd's 1973 authorized tribute adequately sanctifies the legend. Perversely for a documentary, it achieves this simply through well-chosen concert footage rather than through the insights of the various talking heads. Pete Townshend, Eric Clapton, Mick Jagger, Lou Reed, and Germaine Greer are all wheeled out to wax lyrical about their days with Jimi, but nothing is more eloquent than watching and listening to him play. From "Hey Joe" in grainy black and white on the Ready Steady Go TV show, classic footage of Monterey, Woodstock and the Isle of Wight festivals to an acoustic 12- string rendition of Hear My Train a' Comin', Hendrix the musician speaks for himself. But if Hendrix the musician shines through, this is not the most insightful profile of Hendrix the man. The circumstances surrounding his death, for example, are hardly touched upon. Interview footage with Hendrix himself plus some occasionally rambling and incoherent comments from such intimates as his father, army buddies, ex-girlfriends and fellow musicians all take second place to the music itself. The most sensible quote comes from Little Richard, who proves once and for all that he's utterly bonkers when he says of Jimi's music: At times he made my big toes shoot up into my boot.

This movie is a loose mystical voyage story built around Jimi Hendrix's final concert performance at Rainbow Bridge, Hawaii. Not merely a concert film, however, the fictional drama spends most of its time following actress Pat Hartley, who travels to Hawaii and absorbs the local counter-cultural community firsthand. The film culminates in Hendrix's performance atop the enormous Haleakala Volcano, where fans are treated to yet another dazzling display of guitar virtuosity. Tragically, Hendrix died only months after shooting this concert, adding to the film's historical allure. Including such hits as Purple Haze, Foxy Lady, The Star Spangled Banner and more, Rainbow Bridge is yet another testament to the genius of Jimi Hendrix.

This DVD gives a great snapshot of a time and place - well, three nights in 1982 when Bad Brains were at, or about to reach their peak. Technically, there are many blemishes such as varying audio quality and shaky blurry camera work. However, it's striking how effective some of the focused shots on individuals in the crowd really capture the feeling of those shows. For example, there were tons of people jumping onto and off of the stage, no big security people standing guard. One dude was just sort of standing there on the stage until HR finally pushing him off. The images add context to the wildness of the music. The reggae tunes add an interesting balance. It's an inspirational movie.

Os Spiritual Front apresentaram-se com uma banda com quatro elementos - Francesco Sosto (teclado), Andrea Freda (bateria), Alexandro Pace (guitarra) e Simone Salvatori (viola e voz). Com um som bastante diferente do que estávamos habituados nos discos, os SF surpreenderam todos os presentes com uma actuação muito forte e muito perto da perfeição. Apesar de se basear em "Nihilist Cocktails For Calypso Inferno" (Oktagon.2001) Simone não deixou de revisitar alguns temas do seu primeiro MCD "Songs For The Will" (Old Europa Café.1999). Com dark-folk remodelado onde a influência de Michael Gira (Swans) é óbvia, os Spiritual Front cativaram toda a audiência, deixando alguma angústia a curta actuação.

Equal parts punk and psychedelia, the Flaming Lips emerged from Oklahoma City as one of the most bracing bands of the late 1980's. The Fearless Freaks documents their rise from Butthole Surfers-imitating noisemakers to grand poobahs of orchestral pop masterpieces. Filmmaker Bradley Beesely had the good fortune of living in the same neighborhood as lead Lip Wayne Coyne, who quickly enlisted his buddy to document his band's many concerts and assorted exploits. The early footage is a riot, with tragic hair styles on proud display as the boys attempt to cover up their lack of natural talent with sheer volume. During one show, they even have a friend bring a motorcycle on stage, which is then miked for sound and revved throughout the performance, clearing the club with toxic levels of carbon monoxide. Great punk rock stuff. Interspersed among the live bits are interviews with the band's family and friends, revealing the often tragic circumstances of their childhoods and early career. By the time the film reaches the late '90s, Coyne's band has witnessed a number of personnel changes, most notably the introduction of drummer and multi-instrumentalist Steven Drozd. It's here that the Flaming Lips begin their ascent into greatness. Fueled by the alt-pop hit "She Don't Use Jelly," the band enters an era of intense experimentation, conducting a symphony for car stereos in a parking garage, releasing a 4-disc album meant to be played simultaneously, and embarking on the creation of their first masterpiece, The Soft Bulletin. Sadly, Steven Drozd's demons keep pace with the band's success. In an incredibly heartbreaking scene, Drozd talks frankly about his addiction while preparing to shoot heroin. Fortunately, Drozd kicks his habit as the Lips enter the studio for their follow-up, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, and the film ends with the band enjoying widespread acclaim as they deliver one extravagant show after another. There are some conspicuous absences in this tale, notably their weird and lucky break appearing on '80s teen drama Beverly Hills 90210 and their tour as openers and backing band for Beck. The bonus disc includes some cool outtakes and performances, but unfortunately none of the band's vibrant music videos.

Quadrophenia is a 1979 British film based on the 1973 rock opera album Quadrophenia by The Who. The film stars Phil Daniels in the leading role as a Mod named Jimmy. The film also stars Toyah Willcox, Mark Wingett, Leslie Ash, Ray Winstone, Timothy Spall, Phil Davis, Michael Elphick, Kate Williams, Sting, Gary Shail and John Altman. It was directed by Franc Roddam in his feature directing debut. In 2004 the magazine Total Film named Quadrophenia the 35th greatest British film of all time. It's London, 1964, and Jimmy is a member of a Mod gang (working class youths who imitate the attire of upper-class citizens, and ride Vespa and Lambretta scooters). The Mods are always fighting with Rockers, who in turn wear black leather and ride motorcycles. Disillusioned by his parents and a dead-end job as a runner in an advertising firm, Jimmy only finds an outlet for his teenage angst with his mod pals Dave, Chalky and Spider. However his angst and confusion are compounded by the fact that one of his Rocker rivals is in fact childhood friend Kevin (Ray Winstone), to whom he comments "I don't wanna be like everybody else - that's why I'm a Mod, see?". A three-day bank holiday provides the excuse for the rivalry between the two gangs to come to a head, as they both descend upon the seaside town of Brighton. But when Jimmy is arrested during the Brighton riot, which was based on the real life "Second Battle of Hastings" Brighton area Bank Holiday riot of 1964, his life begins to go downhill. He is fined and kicked out of his house by his mother, who found his stash of blues (blue pills of amphetamine). He then quits his job, blows his severance package on blues, and finds out that his crush, Steph is now the girlfriend of his mate Dave. After a short fight with Dave, he wrecks his scooter and finds out his idol, the suave Mod "poster boy" Ace Face (played by Sting), is in reality a bellboy. He steals Ace's scooter and heads out to the cliffs, leading him to an uncertain fate...

Martin Scorcese makes another visually stunning film, and paints Dylan in a way nobody else could have. Instead of being asked stupid questions by stupid journalists, Dylan has a camera put in front of him and he just speaks. He's got a bit of a schedule, but he does what he wants with it. I really don't have words for how this movie made me feel. The sheer passion behind it just fueled my fierce love for Dylan even more. The live bootlegs and behind-stage clips give a wonderful insight into Dylan's world. He is a man who just emanates coolness like it was the way he was born. It seems like nobody can ever have the upper hand on this man, and it's truly a delight to watch.

It's hard to imagine anyone else writing, directing and visualizing a film quite like this. Essentially a record of Laurie Anderson's "Mister Heartbreak" tour, this concert film is mostly comprised of songs and music with a smattering of spoken word pieces thrown in for good measure. Her more recent concerts have been a bit more subdued, so this is a good chance to see her with all the bells and whistles (so to speak). As for the performances, Anderson is radiant and off-the-wall as usual, and her back-up band is top-notch, including such talented players as Adrian Belew, David Van Tieghem and Joy Askew (with whom Anderson shares an amusing phone call in the middle of the show). And William S. Burroughs even waltzes through from time to time.

She ropes in the most amazing names in directing to create videos that are out of this world, and not without controversy either. Some of her videos have been banned in the US because of the nudity content. However this just adds to the weirdness of Bjork.

Then we have Overture from the film Dancer in the Dark to open and lead to the first of 17 pieces of the DVD performed by the swan princess.

During “Come To Daddy” there are some clips of Guggi in a gold/snakeskin? mini skirt - this was from the show in Lausanne, Switzerland on 5/2/83. The “New Form Of Beauty” bits were from the Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin on 7/11/81 & 8/11/81. The backstage footage was from Vienna during February ‘83. “Rhetoric” & “The Pig Children” I’m unsure of the venue and dates although “Rhetoric” could be from a show they did in Bologna, Italy in 1983.

The Dream Syndicate are at the foundation of contemporary alternative music sheerly because at the time when most bands were experimenting with new technology, the Syndicate brought back the guitar. Live, they had developed into an assaultive guitar band prone to jamming which helped earn them the tag as leaders of L.A.'s Paisley Underground movement. DVD features the songs "John Coltrane Stereo Blues", "Now I Ride Alone", "The Side I'll Never Show" and more. Originated on 16mm film, stylistically reminiscent of D.A. This video captures Sonic Youth's West Coast debut in glorious black-and-white. This was a concert video released thru Sonic Death, filmed on January 5th, 1985 in the Mojave Desert. It was filmed on 2 cameras by a couple guys from Flipside. It's actually not quite the entire show - Ghost Bitch is missing between I Love Her All The Time and I'm Insane (you can see Lee w/ the acoustic guitar momentarily).

Recorded in August 2001 in their home city, the show is a subtle mix of their greatest hits and more recent tracks. In an attempt to give the recording a 1980s chic, vintage cine-camera footage of the band on tour (shot in the style of Derek Jarman's work with The Smiths) is superimposed over the live material. While the classics ranging from "Nothing Ever Last Forever" to "Bring on the Dancing" significantly out-number the newer material ("An Eternity Turns" and "King of Kings") they nevertheless sit comfortably together. This DVD features their live show at the Fillmore in San Francisco with DVD features including Japanese tour documentary directed by Patrick Daughters, audience interview documentary direced by Spike Jonze and Lance Bangs, music videos, and live clip from the MTV awards. Rising from art-school backgrounds to form one of New York City's most potent bands, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs have attracted a sizeable following for their delirious tunes. Charismatic singer Karen O is the focal point for much of the attention lavished on the group, but the engine room of guitarist Nick Zinner and drummer Brian Chase are vital allies for the inimitable vocalist as they whip up an unholy racket behind her. Coupled with O's vocal stylings and thoughtful lyrics, the band conjures up a colorful show, with cartoon-like outfits, and high high hair courtesy of Zinner. Here they perform a full set at the Fillmore in San Francisco, working their way through songs from their debut album, FEVER TO TELL, and a selection of tunes from earlier EPs. Also included is an audience documentary from O's paramour, director Spike Jonze (ADAPTATION), and a film shot on tour in Japan. A selection of music videos such as "Maps," "Date With The Night," and "Pin" are also included, and the package is neatly wrapped up with an appearance by the band at the MTV Awards in 2004.

Before MTV auditioned 7 people to live in an unbelievable house and call it real, there was "Another State of Mind". Before 7 or 8 more people had the privilege to cruise in an awesome bus, there were the kids of Social Distortion and Youth Brigade clunking around in a beat-up old School Bus from the 70's! In October of 1982, Youth Brigade lead singer Sean Stern had the idea to "tour" the U.S. along with a pretty good band named Social Distortion. The tour was a failure, but the footage of their adventures till this day is hilarious! The interview of the local fans in the streets is very strong and candid. MArcell, the fellow who was run over by a car, is a very quotable individual. In DC with Minor Threat, is classic, especially the Ice Cream shop footage in Georgetown. A simple documentary about some punks before they became punk legends. It was very rare to see a young Mike Ness with the late Dennis Danell really working on the "Amother State of Mind" the song.
